Whanganui's Mavis Carter still has a spring in her step when it comes to international competition.
The 81-year-old, who is profoundly deaf, has just returned from the athletics module at the World Masters Games in Auckland, where she won gold and silver respectively in the Women's 80-84 year long jumpand triple jump.
Carter faced competition from around seven athletes in her grade, including women from Italy and Malaysia.
An athlete all her life, Carter had a large collection of medals from both New Zealand and World Masters Games, having been to five World events.
As she has cancer, this will be her last World games.
Carter said that everyone at the competition understood her deafness and treated her very well, although she found Auckland to be hard to navigate around to the other various locations for the games.
Among her highlights, other than the medals, was receiving a Masters Games cap which is embroidered with 'Gold Medal Winner', along with meeting the 101-year-old Indian sprinter Man Kaur, who has been featured by multiple media organisations for her own medal-winning exploits.
