Sport Whanganui is delighted with the turnout for two new sporting events in the Marton community, with the proceeds coming back to the locals.
In early February, Sport Whanganui hosted the inaugural Mitre 10 Marton Triathlon at Rangitikei College, and then two weeks later the Marton Rotary Pedal 4 Pleasurebike event.
Spokeswoman Marie Kinloch said in a press release that whenever a new event is introduced, there are concerns whether it will be successful.
However, Kinloch felt the Rangitikei region would be supportive and they were right.
The triathlon on February 5 attracted 137 entries, picking between the short, medium or course options, with an entry fee of $4 as Sport Whanganui and sponsor Mitre 10 Marton were looking to keep the costs down.
The February 19 Pedal 4 Pleasure saw 107 keen riders take the trip through the scenic country in perfect sunny conditions.
"Funds raised from both events are being donated to local organisations, including Marton Rotary youth programmes, meaning the community will benefit in more ways than one," said Kinloch.
"Mitre 10 Marton, Marton Rotary and Sport Whanganui are extremely happy with the support the events received and are keen to continue with both in coming years."
