It is not fear that grips them, only a heightened sense of things.

And the nerves should evaporate by the time the 14 Wanganui area fighters competing in tonight's River City Rumble shape up across the ring among 17 kick boxing, ring karate and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fights.

Of course, the featured attraction is Leon Calver's attempt to put down Palmerston North's Tyrone Campbell and claim the vacant Thai Boxing Association New Zealand super lightweight title.

As both weighed in at 61kg for the five round fight under full Thai rules, coach and event promoter Steve Alderton said physically, North Island champion Calver was ready for the aggressive Campbell.

It just remains to be seen if his mental strength will be there come crunch time for the biggest fight of his career.

"He's nervous about it," said Alderton of the local boy's build-up.

"Leon's going to be technically superior but this guy is very tough and, as I said to Leon, he's got to be careful.

"[Campbell] can throw out a haymaker and catch him with it and we don't want that."

The clash will headline a show which affords a number of excellent Wanganui prospects the chance to shine.

Thai Boxing Association NZ cruiserweight champion Kyle Gallacher will take on Wellington's Rehua Smallman in a non-title match-up at 86kg.

Under modified Muay Thai rules, which do not allow elbow shots, Alderton's son, Brian, completes a long two-year comeback from injury against Wellington's Richard Heaps in an 80-81kg clash.

The younger Alderton, who broke his arm in a New Zealand title fight, placed second in a Kyokushin (full contact karate) tournament in Australia last year.

Heaps will still give him just what his surname suggests, like main eventer Campbell he has had a stint of training in Thailand.

In other modified Muay Thai bouts, 18-year-old Jess Johnston will have his chance to show his development against New Plymouth's Oscar Remihana in their 68kg fight.

"Jess has got a good round house kick on him, so hopefully he'll get to use that good," Alderton said.

Although now with Wellington Kyokushinkai, Kazuki Campbell has done most of his training in Wanganui, so is looking forward to something of a homecoming against Masterton's Zane Hopman in their 92-93kg match-up.

"Good timing, kicks like a mule, an exceptionally good technician," said Alderton.

But there is more than just kick boxing for fight fans to savour as the Rumble will host two MMA fights in the ring.

These will be under B Class rules, which do not allow punching to the head when on the ground.

Matt Gibson, one of the best from the Wanganui Judo Club and also a member of Wanganui Warriors kick boxing club, has his second MMA match-up with Palmerston North's Rian Rees, who earned a points decision win at the last River City Rumble in 2012.

Prepare for a knock-down drag-out as Waverley's Kamipeli Latu, member of the Border Rugby Club, meets New Plymouth's Logan Skelton in a heavyweight clash.

Latu has two MMA wins by knockout, while Skelton is in familiar territory as he made his debut against another rugby exponent in Taranaki rep Maifea Maifea last June.

It was a physically draining war which Maifea took on points.

There will also be two ring karate fights, three round affairs.

Ryan Trevor-Roper, an accomplished tournament fighter who has won multiple national lightweight titles, will face the very strong Bernie Johnstone from Palmerston North.

The first fights of the night will be the novice Muay Thai clashes .

The action starts at 6.30pm at War Memorial Hall.
