Local lads clean up to claim event's top honours

Hometown players won three and top-three placed four times at the Wanganui Region Junior Golf Tournament at Belmont last Saturday.

Fresh back after winning back-to-back senior women's club titles, Tara Raj won the division 2 junior women's grade with a gross score of 76, while promising golfer Bradley Wallis claimed the division 1 junior men's also with a 76 gross. Young Jared Sim claimed the nett victory in the same grade with a 48.

Kyra Garrett (div 2 junior women net) was third with an 83, 11 shots behind the winner. Tawera Te Ngaru, from the Castlecliff club, was runner-up in the div 3 9-hole handicap with a 29, six shots off the lead. Archie Smith (Wanganui) and Briani Lee Te Ngaru (Castlecliff) were second and third respectively in the div 4 9-hole non-handicap event with scores of 56 and 62.

The tournament, hosted by Wanganui Golf Club, had 37 entries over 4 divisions - 18 Hole Junior Men, 18 Hole Junior Women, 9 Hole Handicap and 9 Hole Non Handicap. Junior golfers aged from 7 through to 18 years of age came from as far South as Wellington through to Taumaranui in the north.
