It is always a hard afternoon of tackling hills, bamboo, inflatable obstacles, rope lines and slides during the Gilbertson Mitre 10 Mega Tough Kid challenge in December, so Sport Wanganui wants everyone to be in tip-top condition.

That is why they are hosting the "Toughen Up Challenge" as a precursor to the main event tomorrow afternoon in the Mitre 10 carpark.

As well as the kids, their brave minders are likely to be in for a rough old time. Fifteen schools are signed up for tommorow's challenge, with participants ranging from Year 3 to Year 8 students.

The teams representing the schools will be five kids and one adult - usually a plucky teacher - who will face a variety of fun challenges "that will test tenacity and teamwork".

"The adults have been told to be prepared to get wet - last year's event saw them sitting in a paddling pool of freezing cold water while their teams completed the tasks and this year they are bound to face a similar fate," said spokeswoman Karen Hughes.

The activities will start at the Mitre 10 carpark at 1pm with three teams doing the tasks simultaneously over 30 minutes.

Be warned, these will be "tasks that will test both the mind and the body".

Some of last year's winners will be back to defend their titles. There will also be a $100 Mitre 10 Mega store voucher up for grabs for the winner of each round. Spectators and supporters are invited to head down to the carpark tommorow to support the teams and their poor adults. "The challenge is on to start toughening up the kids for the 2013 Gilbertson Mitre 10 Mega Tough Kid."
