The first of two Fastest Kid on the Block heats was held at Springvale Park yesterday.
The event is organised by Athletics Wanganui and gives children up to the age of 14 the chance to take part in a 60m sprint event. It's a precursor to the Cooks Classic athleticsmeeting at Cooks Gardens next Tuesday with the best from local heats asked to come back to compete during the Classic.
"The Cooks Classic is an adults' event but we give the kids an opportunity to be a part of it," Classic organiser Alec McNab said.
The Fastest Kid on the Block was a chance for children to give athletics a go and also promoted the Cooks Classic to the wider community.
Williams Domain in Wanganui East will host the second heat tomorrow at noon.
