Juniors outplay Manawatu sides

Wanganui's junior cricketers left their mark on their bigger Manawatu association cousins last weekend in Palmerston North.

Playing five grades from under-11 to under-16, Wanganui won four of the match-ups, with only the under-15 side being beaten.

In all cases, as games varied from 40-50 overs, Manawatu batted first with the visitors chasing their totals down in all but one instance.

The under-11s won with 19 overs to spare as coach Jason Clark credited an outstanding fielding effort.

In the under-12s, Quinn Mailman and Cameron MacKintosh were very economical off their eight and six overs respectively.

A number of players contributed to the winning total, led by an undefeated 50 from Raemon Teki which coach Mark Dickson said "was a delight to watch.

"We still have problems with four to five players' fielding but we know that and will continue to work on it.

"Raemon has added a touch of class and stability to our top five."

The under-13s reached their target with three overs to spare on the back of a powerful 70 not out from James Pennyfather, who struck a dozen boundaries and a six.

"He retired at 42 but we needed him at the end with another 28 runs, 67 balls faced for his 70," said coach Hayden Pudney.

The under-15s were left a huge target as the home side swept through to 304-5 and, ultimately, it was too much for the Cameron Beard-coached team, losing their last wicket in the 48th over.

However, the under-16s wrapped up the day with a smart three-wicket win, reaching their 235 target by the 45th over.

Coach Gerrard Hobbs said there were many contributions.

The bowling changes were effective while the fielding and throwing, minus three dropped catches, was good.

Hobbs wanted to see louder calling between the wickets, while a few batsmen played at the wrong long.

Nonetheless, it was a hard-fought win in hot conditions.

Under 12: Manawatu 198-7 (Quinn Mailman 2-23, Cameron MacKintosh 8-1) lost to Wanganui 200-5 (Raemon Teki 55no, Beau Hourigan 46, Tom Dickson 21, Cameron MacKintosh 20, Quinn Mailman 19).

Under 13: Manawatu 143-8 (Angus Dinwiddie 2-17, Blair Pudney 2-13) lost to Wanganui (James Pennyfather 70 not out).

Under 15: Manawatu 304-5 beat Wanganui 159 (Harry Unsworth 39, Quintin Purvis 36).

Under 16: Manawatu 234-4 (Bryant Galpin 2-47, Dylan Martin 1-39) lost to Wanganui 236-7 (Josh Roebuck 63, Angus Baddley 37, Brett Cameron 33, Adam Gill 30no out).
