Juniors lose in the rain in Taranaki

The Wanganui Junior tennis team was beaten 28-8 by a Taranaki Selection at the Manaia Tennis Club on Sunday.

Wanganui Tennis Club development officer Gene Ridgway said the matches had to be moved from the natural grass courts in Hawera as the rain fell at the same time they arrived in town.

The squad consisted of nine boys and only six girls, who competed in singles, doubles and mixed doubles matches.

"Sam Hindmarsh and Taiaha Duxfield from Turakina, Carlos Wilson from St George's [and] Stella Ridgway from all had wins on the day," said Gene Ridgway.

"The young junior team played determined tennis but their Taranaki opponents were too experienced...over the whole day's play."

The next junior representative fixture is against Wairarapa on February 26, followed by fixtures against a strong Manawatu team and possibly Hawkes Bay later in the season.
