The Wanganui Under-13 boys' and girls' hockey teams are looking good for their Central Hockey League tournaments next month after playing well in their warm-up games at the weekend.
In the girls' division matches at Gonville Domain, Taranaki, Rangitikei, Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay and Manawatu all arrived to test out theirsquads in a series of matches.
Wanganui beat Hawke's Bay 2-1 and Taranaki 1-0, but went down to Wairarapa 3-2 in a game in which Hockey Wanganui operations manager Kylie Penn said they had a number of shots on goal but ended up conceding breakaway goals.
Coached by Aaron Manville, the team will take part in their tournament in New Plymouth in October.
The Under-13 boys should take a lot of confidence to Horowhenua next month to defend the Curtis Cup if their weekend results are anything to go by.
Coached by Melissa Hylton, the team won all three of their warm-up games in Levin at the weekend. They beat home side Horowhenua 4-2, Manawatu 3-1, and impressively dealt to Wellington 4-1.
As well as the Central tournaments, the Wanganui Under-15 boys team have been training in preparation for their national tournament, which will be held in Christchurch next month.
