The search is on to find New Zealand's king of the air, which could see them sprout wings for a trip to Malaysia to face off with Dennis Rodman.

HoopNation, in conjunction with Mai FM, have organised the hunt to find the

"Throw Down King" where players can film themselves nailing slam dunks and post the footage online.

"We're finding the person who's obviously got ability, but has the athleticism to go with their basketball game, and creativity as well," said HoopNation co-organiser Paul Berridge.

The best and most popular videos will see the top eight from the Northern (Auckland downwards) and Southern (Wellington downwards) regions have live semifinal playoffs in those cities.

From there, the finalists will be brought to Wanganui on the eve of the HoopNation tournament in October.

These will be the top two from each region plus two wild cards the organisers like.

"Someone who had a wicked dunk on the uploads," said co-organiser KJ Allen.

In Wanganui they will be evaluated by a panel of judges, likely to be NBL luminaries, and the one chosen "King" will receive a trip to Kuala Lumpur to play on the Asian All Star team in a game against the NBA Legends, including Rodman.

To get involved, basketballers can upload their action videos from now until midnight on September 20, placing a hash tag (#) that they are entering the Northern or Southern region.

"We've given them four specific dunks they need to complete and a specific time for them to do it," said Allen.

In no more than two minutes, the high leapers must complete at least four styled dunks from "off the bounce","off the back board", "assisted", "prop" or "raw".

Allen said they will review the top eight most-viewed uploads from each region, so people needed to get in early to ensure everyone has had a chance to see them.
