Cambridge mare Innovation defied the racing pattern of the day for an eye-catching victory in the feature $50,000 AG Challenge Stakes at Wanganui on Saturday.
The Ralph Manning-trained mare was at the tail of the field for most of the listed event, but Wanganui jockey Lisa Allpress kicked her intohigh gear from the 800m.
On the turn for home about 400m out, the $4.70 prospect had moved into contention and raced away to win easily.
The manner of victory was against the run of play during the nine-race card, with the other winners coming from on or near the pace.
However Allpress, who has won on Innovation before, knew what they could do on the rain-affected track.
