Ingredients set for an outstanding match up

Tomorrow will see a blockbusting match-up between the only two unbeaten teams in the Manawatu Women's League when Wanganui Athletic Women host North End AFC Women's 1sts.

The local ladies won't mind that they start the day a point behind their guests on the table, as Athletic have a match in hand over what should be the same side they meet later in the year in the yet-to-be-determined 'top four' group.

Both sides come into the match as free scorers, which logically sees them atop the league standings and equally as miserly as each other in defence.

Athletic hold the upper hand in both departments when the statistics are broken down a massive 118 goals scored compared to North End's 83, while having conceded a mere four goals compared to their visitor's eight.

The ingredients are there for an outstanding contest and provide a good reason to watch some Sunday afternoon football of high calibre at Wembley Park at 1.30pm.

Today, local men's action will also provide plenty of quality and close scores as the teams have now been qualified into two groups.

While the correct names for each of the leagues is found, the 'Top Six' and 'Bottom Six' will do for now.

There are no easy fixtures in the top six, but match of the first round looks to be between the newcomers and late bloomers Castlecliff Gold when they take on the mercurial Cosmos from Athletic.

For the Bottom Six matches, the side looking to reverse their qualifying form are Marist Casuals, but their task is enviable given the opposition today.

Athletic Weekenders were desperately unlucky not to sneak into the Top Six group and will be in the mix for picking up a title come September.
