It could be a 30-minute drive but where's the fun in that?

"None" would be the answer of the 318 runners and walkers who took part in Wanganui Harrier Club's annual Marton to Wanganui Relay last weekend, taking the 66.3km meander through the Turakina, Whangaehu and Matarawa Valleys before arriving at the finish line outside the Wanganui East Club.

The major part of the event is the running team's component, with the 24 entered this year being a jump on recent years, made up of club, social, gym and family units.

Winners were the modestly named Team Super Awesome from the Trentham Harriers, who completed the course in four hours, 13 minutes.

Around eight-and-a-half minutes behind them were the hosting Wanganui Harrier Club A team, followed by newcomers Napier Harriers Gold.

Race manager Bill Charnock said the walking event was won by Walkin Wines from the Taranaki Race Walking Club: "Who paced out the course in six hours, 42 minutes a faster time than a couple of the more social run teams."

Runnersup were the Manawatu Striders, while another Trentham team the Torpedoes finished third in the nine-team field.

There were eight teams in the Composite grade the walk/run combination and team representing Bush Harriers from Pahiatua proved the best in a time of six hours, 28 minutes.

Runnersup were the Mixed Bunch from Eltham, with Ashhurst combination I've Been Thinking close behind.

Nine two-person combinations completed just over 33km each, and the grade was "quinellaed" by Feilding Moa Harriers pairings - as Debra Arnold and Dave Walters led home Tammy Reed and Liana Costello by just four minutes.

The Wanganui Harrier Club duo of Kim Whyte and Grant McLeod were 13 minutes further back .

But the brave ones were the 12 individuals who walked or ran the entire 66.3km distance solo.

"This was the closest fought of the various categories with just 28 minutes separating first place from seventh," said Charnock.

The winner was Waikanae's Nicola Ayson from Waikanae, who took just six hours, 26 minutes to finish.

Next home 10 minutes back was Feilding's Perry Newburn, three minutes ahead of Clinton Simpson from Whitby.

The prizegiving was held at the sponsoring Wanganui East Club at the conclusion.

"A number of teams competed for the first time this year and are promising to return for next year's race. Mark your diaries for 2014," said Charnock.

The relay will run again next year on the second Saturday of the month, which is September 13, 2014.
