THE WHANGANUI Fire Brigade will play host to around 150 firefighters shooting for glory in the annual PBI Fire Service National Golf Tournament in October.

The tournament will be played at the Castlecliff Golf Club links from October 18 to 21. A $47,000 Toyota Hilux can be won by any firefighter skilled, or flukey, enough to snare a hole-in-one on the par 3 13th with $1000 for any ace scored on each of the other par 3 holes at Castlecliff.

"These prizes are sponsored by the generous folk at Wanganui Toyota, who will also be running a roving course barbecue to help satisfy any hunger cravings," qualified Whanganui firefighter James Arnott said yesterday.

"The lucky golfer who aces the 13th can drive away in the Hilux, although we recommend they don't immediately after celebrating in the 19th." The tournament will run gross, nett and stableford formats, and the host brigade will be pouring cold water on any (golfing) burglars aiming to steal the show.

"Obviously handicaps will come into play and nationally we have some very good golfers, so it won't be easy," Arnott said.

A sponsors' grade will also run alongside the main event ,catering for those who sponsor a hole or more in the tournament proper.

Arnott said the host brigade was going all out to ensure the event provided the best possible experience, including offering a shuttle service to and from accommodation.
Entries close on September 20, although late entries may be accommodated with no promises offered.
