The Wanganui club will play their part in the chase for the nation's oldest racing trophy at the Hatrick Raceway this evening by staging a heat of the Stitches Upholstery Waterloo Cup.

The Waterloo Cup was first contested for as a coursing - chasing live hares - contest in 1878.

The event first becoming a mechanical lure race in 1954.

Obviously, over time some interesting incidents have occurred. Here's a flashback to a couple of them:

In 1888 the Auckland dog Sailor Boy was sent to Dunedin. After winning the title, the following year he was sent to Melbourne to contest the Victorian Waterloo Cup.

After making the quarter-finals Sailor Boy was sensationally "dognapped", his owner beaten up on a Melbourne street, while the dog was never recovered.

The consolation rounds of the 1904 edition couldn't be completed owing to a lack of hares - caused by poachers helping themselves to the game during an overnight visit.

The Waterloo Cup is a unique series because heats are staged at four different venues.

The Cambridge and Addington raceways held their heats yesterday.

Tonight it is Hatrick's turn, while the final heat will be conducted as a leg of the guaranteed $100,000 Pick6 at the Manukau Stadium on Sunday.

The first two greyhounds to finish in each heat advances to the $21,000 group one final in Auckland on September 22.

Here's a look at tonight's Hatrick Waterloo Cup heat, Race 8, 7.46pm:

The class act is Speed Legend.

This chaser has gone under the 29.50 second barrier over 520m here twice before.

Forget about his Auckland miss last Sunday, where he received few favours.

He has drawn to be in the finish tonight.

Ritza Jack has exploded through the lower grades around this circuit and he demands respect. He has displayed slick mid-race sectionals on this track.

Mammy Brown is another who has recently stylishly made her way through the lower classes and her claims of advancing deeper into this series certainly cannot be dismissed.

Ate To Much is a reliable chaser on this track and his consistency can be rewarded by a first-two placing.

Hypotential owns sufficient early pace to quickly boot up into early contention from the eight trap here.

He displayed that pace last Friday, where it took a couple of strong chasers to gun him down late.
