Wanganui men's hockey team players endured one of the longest games of their careers on Sunday - and then suffered the cruellest of twists.
Battling for a place in the Central League final, Wanganui led 3-1 going into the last quarter of their semifinal against Manawatu at Levin.
But they surrendered the
lead and were forced into extra time, then a five penalty shoot-out, then sudden death ... and eventually faced the heartbreak of defeat.
"It was an exciting game - and an entertaining one - and the guys all did well, but we are bitterly disappointed after being 3-1 up," coach Les Wilson said.
Wanganui, who finished runners-up in the round-robin, a place ahead of Manawatu, dominated the first half but found luck and a staunch rearguard denying their efforts.
Brad Williamson put them ahead from a penalty corner but Manawatu equalised just before halftime.
When forward Kane Watkin netted twice, a date in the final was on the cards, but two penalty corners in the last 10 minutes brought Manawatu back from the dead.
Extra time couldn't decide the tie - even with the game dropping to nine-a-side and then seven-a-side - and a shoot-out sequence of five one-on-ones against the keeper brought no result.
Finally, in sudden death, Wanganui missed and Manawatu scored.
Wilson's men head to Palmerston on June 12 to dispute third and fourth spot with Taranaki, while Manawatu face Hawke's Bay in the final.
Meanwhile, in Saturday's Manawatu League clash, Wanganui High School were grateful for keeper Andrew Jurgens' athleticism.
He pulled off a string of stunning saves to deny Tech Old Boys in the derby match at Gonville. He was beaten twice, however, which proved the difference between the two sides, Tech winning 2-0.
Jurgens was a rock, but Tech Old Boys could be accused of failing to take their chances.
They had numerous penalty corners in the second half, but only nailed one, courtesy of Callum Wilbur. Earlier Brad Williamson opened the scoring.
Mason Glennie at right half had a strong match for Tech, while for High School, Jurgens was a standout, with Daniel Aplin and Matthew Ratcliffe providing plenty of bright moments.
High School coach Langley Atkinson said Tech were the better side and eventually got the better of a first half "arm wrestle".
"But I'm happy with the way my boys defended. Daniel and Kyle Heibner did well at the back."
A horror start put Collegians on their heels against Marist in their women's league match in Palmerston North.
They improved as the game wore on but still went down 4-0.
Captain Colleen Baylis blamed basic errors for conceding three early goals, and having a number of players unavailable added to their problems.
Pipa Norman battled hard in defence for Collegians, while Melissa Hylton impressed at times in a return appearance in goal.
Both leagues have next weekend off due to Queen's Birthday.
