Ray Mosen's playing partners were a lot more excited than he was as his drive left the tee on the second hole at the Belmont Links on Thursday.
Playing in the Business House league at Wanganui Golf Club, the veteran's eyesight is not what it used to be so hewas not initially aware he was about to become the latest Wanganui golfer to make a hole-in-one this summer.
"I didn't actually see any of it at all. Once it leaves the club I lose it, a white ball is hard to find [in the sky]," Mosen said. "The guys were singing out 'go in, go in' and it did."
He had used a 5 Iron on the Par 3 hole to make his second ace. The previous effort was at a Tawhero Golf Club event in 1999.
Mosen's magic stroke helped his Air Shotz team win the Business House night for "Course A".
Having picked up the game in the mid-1960s, Mosen used to play seriously and got down to a nine handicap. It is a bit longer these days but he still gets out when he can.
The previous hole-in-one struck in Wanganui Golf Club was on November 19 by another Tawhero member in Blue Davies, also during the Business House league.
American golf insurance company US Hole In One calculates the odds of the average player making the shot at 12,500 to 1.
