The annual Wanganui East Club's open petanque triples championship this weekend is expected to be a hard fought battle with defending titleholders Bob Bridge (Kerikeri), Lee Tafford and Maurice Belz (both Napier) among the favourites again.
Hosted by the club's petanque adjunct, the triples this weekend is expected to fieldabout 25 teams from throughout the country, including a number of new players to the game from the River City.
Wanganui teams will also include former national men's singles champion, Pete "Pieman" Hamilton, Christine Strichen, who has only recently returned from the Women's World Championships in France, and former New Zealand representatives Yvonne Futcher and Shirley Selwyn.
Play begins at 8.30am on Saturday and Sunday on the Wanganui East Club pistes with the final expected around 3pm on Sunday.
