It was a rare afternoon of racing at Hatrick yesterday as the Wanganui Greyhound Racing Club finished off 2016 with a family day at the track.

As the Cambridge Raceway was holding a big evening of feature finals, Hatrick put on a 14-race card in daylight hours.

One of the most keenly anticipated races was the $3400 Liquorland Wanganui C4 over 520m.

The Lisa Ahern-trained Absinthe Minded leapt well to have the lead approaching the first dash past the post, but coming from the outside trap was Kirkham Kylie, the product of Marton trainer Matt Roberts kennels.

Kirkham Kylie led the charge down the back straight, but Absinthe Minded had regained the lead as they rounded the turn, with another Ahern charge in Sheer Miss coming on strong.

Absinthe Minded picked up the win in 30.49s, with Sheer Miss second, followed by Kirkham Kylie and another Ahern greyhound in Allegro Beaty.

It continued a good run for Ahern, who has a comfortable lead over John McInerney in the National Trainers' Premiership.

Ahern also had winning greyhounds in Race 2, 6, and 8 yesterday, while Roberts tasted victory in Race 7, 9 and 13.
