For the first time in it's 7-8 year existence, the RDO Shield will have Wanganui engraved on it after the Development XV completed their campaign in style, with a 37-10 win over Horowhenua Kapiti B in Levin on Saturday afternoon.

Wanganui scored six tries in the final, four of them in the second half despite heavy rain setting in, after leading 15-3 at the break.

Winger Moli Sagapolutele opened the scoring after eight phases brought his team to the line, and a quick tap was spread to him out wide.

Wanganui would capitalise on mistakes as centre Tremaine Gilbert chased a bomb and when Horowhenua Kapiti bungled it he grubbered through to score.

Gilbert took his second try, running off a beautiful no-look flick pass from Josaia Navitio after halftime.

Reserve back Eric Sagapolutele added his name to the sheet when a flat kick was put into the corner, where he toed the ball through and picked it up with one hand to scoot over.

Goalkicking fullback Grayson Tihema then added what his coach Shane Ratima called the try of the game.

"We went left, right, then left, right, probably eight phases.

"Grayson stepped a couple of guys and went back under the posts."

Wanganui then wrapped it up as Navitio chipped and regathered then fed Ratima, who had come on late as reserve hooker, before the ball was spread to winger Jaye Flaws to score.

Given he had a hand in most of the big moments, Navitio was the deserved player of the day.

Ratima also singled out Gilbert, captain Mohi Waihi and both the locks Fraser Bryant and Simon Hillis for good games. Their coach was very proud of the team to have done so well with just seven training sessions for their five games.

"It was an outstanding effort, even as late as Friday we didn't know what the lineup was. We played out of our skins."

Their season now over, the wider squad members of the Steelform Wanganui team will continue training for the Heartland campaign.

Ratima will also meet coach Karl Hoskin this week to provide him with a list of around six players he would recommend as cover should the need arise.
