It's local Derby day for the two Western Premiership sides as City Reserves play host in the main fixture at Wembley Park to Wanganui Athletic 1sts.

The 2.30pm kick off will see both sides bring contrasting results to the second round after City saw off Takaro Titans, a "bogey" side of theirs over recent seasons, winning 4-2 over in Palmerston North last week.

Athletic opened up their campaign with a narrow 2-1 loss to a perceived favourite in the league Levin AFC here at Wembley Park.

City will have some confidence after the Takaro result first up and will want to put away last season's inconsistencies in the results column, which saw them slip down to mid-table after taking the title in 2011 in what was then the Mid-Central league.

Athletic for their part won't be too perturbed by the Levin result and will be happy to take stock and continue to develop each outing, with a group of younger players still coming to terms with the higher level of the game.

In a rebuild which is the approach for the latter in today's match, results cannot always be the yard stick by which all is measured.

For the Reds it will be improving at each outing and the ability to spring a result.

Manawatu Women's League

A comprehensive 11-0 thrashing of opponents PN Marist Evergreenz by the Athletic Women last Sunday will have made coach Dave Downes a relatively satisfied man, as his side entered into their quest to take on the best from the Manawatu to play off for a Central League Women's spot.

It would usually mean after one round that the side would sit atop the ladder.

But other sides have fired their own warning shots that they also mean business 21 of them in fact for Massey Reserves and 14 by PN Marist 1sts.

It looks like the three aforementioned could well play out a big part in the title race, even this early on. At 1.30pm tomorrow, Wembley Park will see Athletic at home in Round 2 as they host PN Marist Harlequins, a side who suffered 0-5 against North End 1sts last weekend.

The locals are looking to pile on more goals as they don't want to get behind in differential should the points race become a tight affair later down the track.
