Wanganui High School hockey is delighted they have moved up a tier on the national secondary school level after claiming the Mary Clinton Cup in Whakatane.

The Jan Dixon-coached First XI claimed the trophy with five straight victories during national secondary schools sports tournament week, which means they will compete at the third division level in 2014 after winning the fourth tier.

WHS looked good in the pool games, beating Mount Maunganui College 4-1 and then Kerikeri High School 2-0.

The roll continued in the quarterfinals as they comfortably saw off Taupo-nui-a-Tia College 7-1.

Tauranga's Otumoetai College was next in the semifinals with a 3-1 win, then the WHS team had to knuckle down for the trophy game with Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Koutu the team from Rotorua's Maori immersion school which excels at sports.

"I knew they were going to come out pretty hard because they wanted to win as much as we did," said Dixon.

In the end, WHS scored a goal in each half to win 2-0 and claim the cup.

Dixon singled out captain Kara Jurgens and multi-sport star Jessica Watkin for having great tournaments, as both scored six goals each.
