Established players and newcomers alike had a crack at the Wanganui Secondary School Squash Championships on Wednesday.

Held at the Wanganui Squash Club, whereas previous instalments were at Ruapehu College, it was the two boys teams who both had graded club players where the main action was.

Cullinane Boys would end up defeating Ruapehu Boys 2-1.

One of the highlights was top seed James van Kerkhoff going up against Ruapehu's Matty Laurenson, which had a big audience as the other teams had finished their games.

Victory went to van Kerkhoff 3-1.

Also, Cullinane's James McKenzie, who will be competing in the Wanganui Squash Club's E-Grade team at the nationals next week, had a 3-0 win over Johnny Double.

The event was organised by Sport Wanganui's Nicole Dryden and the club's Alastair White, with a lot of first timers playing in the other matches involving Nga Tawa and Wanganui High School.

Club spokeswoman Phillipa Harold said the two organisers have also been looking at a secondary school league for Year 9-10 students, to be held at the end of the year.
