He may not have officially entered but, when you know the mountain like the back of your hand, you can definitely refer to Shane Williams as the "master".
The member of the Wanganui Mountain Bike Club spent a lot of time preparing the 5km course at Hylton Park for the Down Hill challenge at yesterday's New Zealand Masters Games.
Therefore on the day, Williams thought he would join the 43 competitors taking part, joining the four-lap Expert section and riding home first in 1 hour, 7.57min.
Williams also had the fastest lap of 16min, 32sec. "It was bloody hard," he said back at base camp.
"But it was a fun track though - 5km around, not a lot of elevation."
