Whanganui Multisport Club and Triathlon Club is hosting its annual Bridge to Bridge swim and, with 42 pre-entries, it is already one of their biggest events this summer.
Starting at 10.30am, the long course version of the swim starts from thepontoon at the Aramoho Rowing Club and will finish 3km down river at the Union Boat Club.
Fifteen minutes later is the start of the 1km short course, which leaps off from beside Pitt St near the Dublin St Bridge.
Race registration will be upstairs at the Union club for those already signed up and those joining in today.
Spokeswoman Melina Holmes says while transport to the start lines is not directly provided, the club will help co-ordinate people who wish to carpool to make sure everyone gets there.
"The latest Summer Monitoring reports show the Whanganui River as a 'green' coding, which means testing shows it is safe for swimming."
Those results can be found at www.horizons.govt.nz.
"We have been lucky that the tides mean we can run it in the morning, finishing when the River Markets are still on and hopefully lots of people to cheer on the swimmers," says Holmes.
