The Sport Whanganui review of college sport continues this week focusing on Whanganui Girls College.
Along with the multitude of sports offered at Whanganui Girls' College, hockey has been a focus for the first part of 2016, especially given the addition of the new all-weather turf at the end of
2015. After seven senior players left last year for the big wide world, the school was fortunate to have many juniors sign up to take their place.
Alongside core sport WGC strengthen and support the programme with Renegade Hockey, which runs within the PE curriculum. The 1st X1 team finished third in their grade this year and prepared well for tournament week. The girls are fortunate to have the continued support of coach Dave Andrews and manager Maree Keelty.
As some of the school's winter sports come to a close, WGC has secured two very passionate experts to build and develop a rugby programme at the school.
Kristina Sue (Head of PE & Cyclone 7's player) along with Jordan Maraku, who have been training a squad of around 25 girls in preparation for Rippa Rugby, then 7's, which is being run at Whanganui City College.
