Swinging into an exciting upcoming season the young male members of the Wanganui Boys & Girls Gym Club were among those to get some first-class training at the weekend.

The club was host to the 2013 annual Men's Artistic Gymnastics training clinic, involving 28 boys from around the North Island taking part in two days of activities.

Showing them the ropes, or more accurately the rings, were Auckland's Leo Rodrigues, the club's former Competitive head coach, Porirua's Aileen Berryman and Auckland's Flaminio de Oliveira.

Current club Competitive Head Coach, Viv Hughan, said the training was for athletes as well as other coaches. "The boys train vault, high bar, rings, parallel bars, floor and pommel horse.

"This is getting towards the end of their pre-competition season, so the boys are working on final touches of their skills to prepare for their first competition."

The boy members of the club have their first event in the Hawkes Bay on May 18-19.
