A number of Wanganui's sporting identities switched to an unfamiliar code when they took to the Aramoho Bowling Club greens yesterday for the Wanganui Car Centre Celebrity Bowls Day.

Around 76 players, a mix of regular club bowlers and well-known members of the community played in drawn teams of three after making donations towards the Wanganui Branch of Autism NZ.

Rather than have a tournament winner, everyone went in the draw for nine sponsors' prizes.

In total, $1340 was raised for the charity, which was greatly received by Wanganui branch co-chairperson Peter Smith.

"We really appreciate the local support for Wanganui Autism families and members," said Smith.

Of special note is the effort of Cooks Gardens events and facilities manager Vallie Finlay, who ran a Facebook campaign to raise $400 for the cause.
