Wanganui petanque player Yvonne Futcher fought out a thrilling final in the Wellington regional women's singles last weekend.
Held at the Wanganui East club, the tournament saw Futcher claim local bragging rights when she beat clubmate Christine Strichen, the New Zealand rep and defending champion, in the quarter-final.
In thefinal, she forged a 7-3 lead over Masterton's Claire Wilson before her opponent produced the shot of the match.
Wilson threw a carreau, one of the sport's most difficult shots, which saw her boule knock out Futcher's and stay in a scoring position.
That play changed the course of the match and Wilson eventually took the regional title 13-9.
