They are coached by former Marist rugby man Stewart Reweti and captained by former Wanganui rugby standout Steelie Koro, who made a high profile defection to the 13-man code in 2012.
Other notable former 15-a-side men are Shane Barlow and Reweti's son Ihaka Reweti.
The senior Reweti said six to seven wins should see them through to the Premier grade for the first time.
With possibly the biggest forward pack in the competition, Reweti who coached Marist Celtic for seven years has been teaching his side, including the first to come through the junior grades, just the basic fundamentals.
"It was like a dying [sport]," he said.
"If it wasn't for the juniors coming through, they had nowhere to go."
Having won three national rugby union titles, two club championships and regular selection in the New Zealand Heartland XV, Koro said he switched codes to find "new challenges" and has loved being on the ground floor of the team's development.
"I started with this club last year, which was the start of the whole club in a senior team.
"To get where we are now is an achievement in itself.
"The goal is to win the whole comp."
Last year six of the team were also selected for the Central Vipers, for several their first taste of representative sport and a big catalyst for sticking with league this season.
