The farmers would have been happy to see it, but the heavy rainfall ground any hope of spectacle to a halt in Waverely on Saturday afternoon as Border made it two wins from two against Utiku Old Boys.

The 25-0 victory, which was bracketed by host tries inside the first and final five minutes, never really got far out of first gear as the slippery pill popped out of both sides' hands in pinball fashion.

Referee Murray O'Hara was almost apologetic by game's conclusion as he had to blow the whistle for yet another scrum.

The contrast of seeing driving rain on a Dallison Park pitch still sunburnt from months of drought was striking as the new Grand Hotel Challenge Shield holders had a solid start through two tries to fullback Fraser Middleton.

His second touchdown was a well taken backline play as the long passes stuck to send danger man Sailosi Naoiso away, unloading in the tackle to Middleton backing up.

But for the next 60 minutes there would only be a sole penalty to Border's Mark Davis as both sides worked into good positions but could not hang on to the ball long as the rain pelted down.

Utiku's best chances came from the some clever chip kicks by first-five Terangi Tapu, while winger Carl Farrell did well on defence.

However, from slippery hands and kicks missing touch, the visitors gave far too many opportunities to the home side, who luckily for them were in no better shape to capitalise.

Naoiso looked dangerous every time play came his way, and provided the match's highlight when he palmed off two tacklers for a 50m burst down the touchline. Two phases later Davis handed off to second-five Andy Hamilton to score beside the posts.

Utiku reserve forward Adam Roe made a late impact, but his team had little to show for a miserable afternoon.

Perhaps it was a shared misery, however, as the game had none of the rough play from Border's match with Pirates last week, which resulted in red and yellow cards.

Utiku coach Gavin Thomas found little in the way of positives, although he felt his team could have made better use of the high ball.

"When we did it, it actually worked.

"A bit of a shock to us, we haven't seen rain. I guarantee you it's not raining at home."

It was similarly hard for Border coach Peter Richardson to store away any lessons having trained in fine weather all week and perhaps not likely to see such rain this coming Saturday.

"You can't read too much into it.

"Still, it's bloody good to be two from two. It's slow steps at this stage."

Waverley Harvesting Border 25 (Fraser Middleton 2, Andy Hamilton tries, Mark Davis 2 pen, 2 con) bt Utiku OB 0. HT: 15-0.
