Another Sunday, another comprehensive hammering by the undefeated Wanganui Athletic's Women's team as they put the North End Reserves to the sword 15-0 at Wembley Park.
The one-sided affair for the first round of the Manawatu Knock Out Cup was hardly the decent hit-out coach Dave Downes was wanting afterlast weekend's Manawatu League game with the North End 1sts was called off due to wet weather affecting games everywhere except Wanganui.
Showing no rust, former Football Fern Ella Wiebe sent six balls into the back of the net, while livewire midfielder Rose Lockett grabbed a hat trick.
The remaining six goals were spread throughout the lineup.
"It was not the kind of game we wanted," Downes said. "The opposition was not up to our standard."
It remains to be seen how much a gap exists in quality between North End's reserve squad and their undefeated 1sts team Downes trying not to read too much into the 5-0 win by 1sts when the club held their local derby. He hopes to have that make-up game from the postponement in the near future, with both teams sitting on top of the league.
In the Knock Out Cup, Wanganui Athletic press on to the Cup round while North End Reserves go to the Consolation round.
A tougher contest is expected next Sunday as Wanganui Athletic travel to South Taranaki to take on Hawera in the Federation Cup quarterfinals.
