Fishing insight

Recently former Solicitor-General Michael Heron QC was asked to carry out an independent review of the failure of the Ministry of Primary Industries to prosecute clear breaches of the law by the fishing industry involving fish dumping, non-reporting of catches and the likely non-reporting of dolphins being killed as by-catch.

The ministry's job is to protect the public interest, not to protect the interests of the fishing industry.

In 2012 cameras (placed by the ministry?) on six fishing vessels had revealed illegal dumping of 20 to 100 per cent.

The ministry failed to prosecute even this small sample, so the exercise was a complete waste of time.

It is an insight as to how poorly the industry is being managed. Now companies are placing their own cameras on board and, in effect, the fishing companies are in control. So we have really no idea what is going on.

World fishing stocks are almost fully overfished and NZ fisheries will go the same way unless management by the ministry is greatly improved.

Let's hope things have changed for the better since the Heron report.

True treaty

If H Norton read Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the Maori language and signed by 565 rangatira and then read the Littlewood Treaty draft (found 1989 and now buried in Te Papa Museum) he/she would find that the Littlewood draft, written by Busby from Hobson's notes, is the document that Rev. Williams and his son translated into Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

There are no "principles" in Te Tiriti. There is a preamble and 3 "Articles" and Norton could get a translation of Ko Te Tuatahi (Article first) "wakaminenga ke tuku rawa atu ki" which transcribes to "confederation, cede to" etc.

The words in Te Tiriti o Waitangi say what they mean and mean what they say. Te Tiriti is NZ's true and legitimate founding document.

Carbs not good

Congratulations to Brian Scott (Chronicle, March 1) on being a serious athlete at his age.

He seems to think he is going to get some edge by carb loading. It sounds good but it is behind the times.

He should research Professor Tim Noakes, the South African endurance sports guru who wrote a book on the benefits of carbs and developed a carb sachet to be taken during races.

He now says burn the book; it was all wrong and fat is the best source of energy. It stays in your system long-term and is instantly available.

I hope Mr Scott is not on a low-salt diet or he will soon be on blood thinners. Low-salt diets lead to dehydration, which is especially dangerous for the elderly in heat waves.

US divisions

People keep saying US President Donald Trump needs to unite his country instead of causing divisions.

At his speech to the US Congress, President Trump gave many chances for that unity, but none more so than the tribute to the brave widow of Ryan Owens, the American Navy SEAL who died in the recent operation in Yemen.

Here was a chance for all those present and all Americans to pay tribute to Carryn Owens, to her bereavement, and to her husband. It was not about Trump, it was not about politics, it was just a really beautiful, and unifying moment.

There was a standing ovation from all present, and for most that ovation went on for some time as they showed their appreciation. But while everyone else present was standing and clapping, most of the Democrat party sat back down and many stopped clapping, and they stayed that way while the ovation went on.

After the speech some Democrat politicians, some media commentators and some celebrities verbally attacked the widow for being at Congress as the President's guest.

Perhaps it's not the President who is causing some of those divisions?
