Wanganui Intermediate students are busy fundraising towards the cost of their trip to compete in the National Junior Robocup championships in Dunedin on September 13.
Reuben Gould, Josiah Booth-Richards, Cameron Russell, all 12, and Levi Harvey, 13, have been holding sausage sizzles and collecting tree sleeves for Horizons Regional Council.
The team members are training the robots they have built to compete in the robot soccer and robot rescue sections of the national competition.
For the soccer competition, students are required to design and program two robots to compete against an opposing pair of robots by kicking an infra-red transmitting ball into their designated goal.
The rescue competition mimics real-life situations where robots are used to rescue people from life-threatening situations.
"They have built extra robots and they are now testing them to see which ones perform best and they will have back-ups for the competitions," robotics teacher Leigh Harvey said.
"They are programming their robots to be the best they can be - building up their speed and reliability.
"Any errors that occur at the competition will be human rather than mechanical."
