Workers earn second chance at learning

A group of workers at Axiam Plastics in Wanganui graduated from its Training For You workplace programme yesterday.

The eight graduates were the third group from the company to graduate, achieving unit standards in literacy and numeracy.

Axiam Plastics general manager Frank Oskam said the group of workers admitted not doing well at school and had volunteered for the workplace programme.

For most businesses, the programme includes working with manuals and standard operating procedures, he said.

Mr Oskam said it was good for workers to know what the company's needs and goals were.

"We help them with their literacy and numeracy, and it helps everyone."

The men attend an education session once a week, courtesy of the company.

Yesterday they were presented with their certificates.
