Woman facing serious charges wants to represent herself

Geneva Tumango Patea appeared in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday.

Angry with her lawyer, a Whanganui woman refused to enter the court room because she felt she had been "f***ed over".

Geneva Tumango Patea faced a charge Judge Dugald Matheson said was a "very serious offence".

When Patea eventually appeared in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday, from custody, she pleaded not guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm involving a firearm.

Defence lawyer Debbie Goodlet told Judge Matheson she wanted to withdraw as Patea's lawyer.

Patea said she did not trust Ms Goodlet and wished to represent herself.

"I asked her to get an independent psychiatric report and I've heard nothing", Patea said.

"I feel like I've been f***ed over."

The Crown said a previous psychiatric report found Patea fit to plead and Ms Goodlet had made inquiries for a independent psychiatric report but they were waiting for funding.

Patea continued to verbally abuse Ms Goodlet until Judge Matheson stepped in.

"I will not accept for one of my senior advisers who goes above and beyond her workload to be talked to like that," Judge Matheson said.

Patea told Judge Matheson to "get f***ed" and was then escorted back into custody.

She was remanded for a trial hearing at a later date.
