He pleaded guilty in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday to wilful damage.
Defence lawyer Stephanie Burlace said "Things got out of hand when the victim walked into the friend's home."
Judge Philip Crayton said Tyson was "running to the thin end of your chances where alcohol is concerned and where offending is concerned".
He sentenced him to 80 hours of community work, nine months of supervision, and ordered him to pay $200 reparation.
He hoped the sentence would allow Tyson to access programmes that would address his alcohol problems.
"The aim here is to address your issues," he said.
