The warm and dry weather Whanganui experienced for Wellington Anniversary weekend is expected to continue throughout the week, despite a storm moving over the North Island.

“We’re not expecting a lot of change for the Whanganui area this week,” MetService meteorologist Oscar Shiviti said.

A subtropical low was moving over the North Island, bringing heavy rain and strong wind to Northland and Auckland, but Whanganui was expected to be sheltered from the storm.

“Because the moisture is coming in from the east, it becomes quite sheltered and doesn’t reach Whanganui,” Shiviti said.

Whanganui could expect some southerly winds throughout the week.

High temperatures were forecast, with a top of 29C on Wednesday, dropping to 25C on Thursday and 24C on Friday.

Whanganui could expect relatively clear skies with, at most, “areas of cloud here and there”.

The weekend should be “not too much of a change from what we’re expecting during the week”, Shiviti said, with dry conditions and highs of 25-26C.
