Whanganui’s Christmas Day weather is expected to be a mixed bag.

MetService meteorologist Oscar Shiviti said the district can expect fine spells, a high of 23C, and isolated showers in the morning on Christmas Eve.

“We’re expecting the fine spells to increase as the day progresses so nothing really to worry about there.”

The high temperature will climb to 26C for Christmas Day and it will likely be fine in the morning.

“From the afternoon on Christmas Day, we’re expecting the indication of some showers starting to develop over the area as a front moves over.”

Through December 24 and 25 people can expect “quite-light to fresh” north-westerly winds, moving southerly into Boxing Day.

“The only time we’re expecting a change is from the 26th where the winds change to a southerly as the front that was over the North Island moves over to the east with the southerlies behind it,” Shiviti said.

“We’re expecting the showers to be most significant on Boxing Day.”

On Friday showers can once again be expected in the morning, easing in the early afternoon.

Thursday and Friday’s temperatures, and into the weekend, should remain a consistent high of 21C and overnight lows of 14C.
