Rubbish collection
Waste Management NZ's contract with Whanganui District Council to collect rubbish bags in rural areas has been extended to July 31, 2021 after direct negotiation with the council.
No camping
Planned felling of poplars at a Totara Reserve Regional Park campground in the Pohangina Valley will take one or two months and mean camping there will not be possible until November or December, Horizons Regional Council biodiversity and biosecurity manager Rod Smillie says. The reserve's other campground will be open from Labour Weekend. Swimming in the Pohangina River will be restricted until both campgrounds are open.
Beethoven turns 250
Chamber Music Wanganui will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven by hosting a concert by Michael Houstoun at the Royal Wanganui Opera House on Sunday, October 18 at 3pm. Tickets available from RWOH box office. Ph 06 349 051.
Collision injures two
Two people were transported to Whanganui Hospital after a two-vehicle collision near Ohakune yesterday. Emergency services were alerted just before 7am to the crash on the intersection of State Highway 49 and Mangateitei Rd. Both patients were transferred to Whanganui Hospital in a serious condition, one by helicopter and one by ambulance. One was later reported to be in a serious but stable condition and the other in a stable condition. There was another crash just outside Marton about 6.20am. A truck had rolled over, temporarily blocking parts of the road. No one was reported injured and the road was cleared by 7am.
