READY TO SHOOT: Steve Hatch and Caleb Frandsen arrived at Whanganui airport from the US on Wednesday.

American hunters Caleb Frandsen and Steve Hatch head out into bush up the Whanganui River on Friday morning, armed with rifles and a video camera.

The two visitors from Utah have been invited to take part in the Whanganui River hunting competition, based at Jerusalem this year.

They will hunt today and tomorrow - with red deer, samba and fallow deer the likely targets - while also filming their exploits for United States TV channel CarbonTV, which specialises in outdoors and hunting programmes.

The pair have hunted and filmed over much of the US, but this is their first overseas trip, arriving in Whanganui on Wednesday via Los Angeles and Auckland.

Mr Frandsen said their Whanganui footage would be edited into two half-hour shows which would highlight the natural environment of the Whanganui region and also its appeal to hunters.

Organisers of the competition hope the show will spread the word about Whanganui in the States and open the way for more hunting tourism.

The three-day event ends on Sunday with the weigh-in, prizegiving and a food festival at Jerusalem marae.
