A rural home near Whanganui has won a gold award in the Manawatū, Whanganui and Taranaki Registered Master Builders 2018 House of the Year competition.

The home, built by Shane Stone Builders and designed by Paul McKenna, was the only Whanganui entry and won the $700,000-$1 million category.

The 387sq m house has a country-look interior with features such as craftsman architraves and ceiling beams and was designed to make the most of the views.

The regional competition results were announced in Palmerston North on Friday, July 6.

A Palmerston North home, built by Avenue Construction and described as 'a model for New Zealand's affordable homes', won the supreme award and will compete in the national final.
