Whanganui Black Power associate back behind bars after gang bust-up

A gang bust-up in Marton has landed a Whanganui Black Power associate back in jail.

Ngaika Kiu, 24, appearing in the Whanganui District Court last week, admitted three burglaries, unlawful assembly, disturbing the peace, possessing a weapon and a breach of her release.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Stephen Butler said Kiu was in central Marton on July 21 with associates when a car full of Mongrel Mob members emerged.

"The defendant found a [metal] bar and her associate had a knife . . . [Kiu] smashed the front passenger window with the [metal] bar and there was verbal abuse that continued for five minutes," Mr Butler said.

Over one week from August 13-21, on three separate occasions, Kiu attempted three burglaries at Pak n' Save in Whanganui.

She was successful in the first attempt but was stopped by staff in the other two and drove off without the items.

Judge Philip Crayton said at the age of 24 Kiu had accumulated eight pages of previous history going back to 2010.

"A vast majority of that has been theft, shoplifting, wilful trespass and burglary."

Judge Crayton sentenced Kiu to seven months and three weeks imprisonment.

"These sentences are going to get longer and it's up to you whether you take the opportunities available to you.

"I can see it is causing you great distress and it will continue to if you keep stealing people's stuff - all in your own hands," Judge Crayton told Kiu.
