Visitors to the Whanganui Regional Museum will this weekend get the opportunity to learn how to weave flax.

Students from Te Wananga o Aotearoa will be teaching the public the basics of raranga, or flax weaving, as part of their Diploma of Weaving assessment.

Weaving tutor Trina Taurua said the students were required to teach three classes on simple weaving designs such as bracelets and flowers.

"Anyone can enrol for our weaving courses," Ms Taurua said.

"People might think it's just a Maori thing, but we have plenty of people who aren't Maori - we even have a Japanese woman in our class." And while the current crop of students are all female, Ms Taurua said that was just a coincidence.

"Traditionally the women just did the weaving and the men did all the picking and the preparing of the flax.

"I wish it was still that way because the preparing is the least fun part of the process."

Ms Taurua said her courses followed the skills and practices of legendary weaver Diggeress Te Kanawa, who died in 2009.

"There are many stories and legends about weaving," she said.

The raranga classes will run on Saturday and Sunday from 10.30am till 3pm.
