Whanganui is set to begin 2025 with mediocre weather — scattered showers and windy days will kick off the year.

MetService meteorologist Ngaire Wotherspoon said Whanganui was one of the better places to be over the New Year period, with weather warnings for the east coast of the country.

However, there was a risk of thunderstorms on Monday night and they may produce hail.

Heading into Tuesday, more showers were expected, along with southerly winds. Wotherspoon said those winds should ease in the evening.

“It should be a pretty nice New Year’s Eve night, heading into New Year’s Day.

“It might be quite windy, perhaps a little bit cool, so if you’re heading out bring an extra layer with you.”

January 1 will bring the tail end of the windy conditions but the day will start with showers that will ease in the afternoon.

The best day of the week looked like Thursday, with temperatures ranging from 14-22C.

Early predictions anticipated a wet end to the week with Friday producing strong westerlies.

“We’ve got another frontal system coming up in from the west so there will be a bit of a wet end to the week, probably,” Wotherspoon said.
