Parents and caregivers wanting to reduce the amount of waste generated by small humans can learn how to do so at a fun and inspirational workshop to be held in Whanganui.

The Waste Free Parenting Workshop was devised by Katikati mum and motivational speaker Kate Meads.

Over a decade of encouraging others and delivering a variety of workshops throughout New Zealand, she has been described as the country's own "waste-free warrior" and developed her uniquely humorous and motivational speaking style.

Meads said disposable nappies were a big contributor to landfills and there were alternatives that did not cost a lot in time or money.

"A baby goes through around 5500 nappy changes in their first two and a half years but that doesn't mean you have to send 5500 nappies to landfill," she said.

Meads' offsider Rochelle Searle will deliver a workshop designed for expectant parents and those with a newborn at home.

"Rochelle will take you through cloth nappy 101, give you loads of tips on washing, choosing the right style for your baby and much more," Meads said.

"It's not just nappies either, learn about landfills, recycling, and a bunch more tips and tricks to reduce your weekly waste output."

Meads said her inspiration came from her own experiences as a typical modern-day consumer.

She established her eco-company Waste Free With Kate & Co and works in partnership with local authorities to deliver the parenting workshops as well as Waste Free Living and
Food Waste presentations.

Several approved companies producing eco-friendly products provide sponsorship and gift bags for workshop participants.

"We don't sell anything but we endorse products that meet with our ethos," Meads said.

"The ticket price for the parenting workshop is $27, and every participant will get a cloth nappy starter pack worth $100, so they can get started on waste minimisation straight away."

• Waste Free Parenting Workshop: St Pauls Church Lounge, 112 Guyton St, Friday, June 11, 6.30pm – 8.30pm. Bookings essential, spaces are limited. Book at eventfinder.co.nz.
