Voters in Wanganui have elected into power the district's first woman mayor with Annette Main prevailing over outgoing deputy Dot McKinnon in a close race.
According to preliminary results released this afternoon, Ms Main holds a majority of 219 votes over Ms McKinnon.
There will be three newcomers around the council table with Hamish McDouall, Clive Solomon and Jack Bullock joining a council that includes outgoing mayor Michael Laws, and mayoral candidates Ray Stevens and Philippa Baker-Hogan.

Ms Main was the highest polling council candidate but because she was elected mayor her place on council goes to the next-highest polling candidate after the top 12 – Rob Vinsen.
Newcomers Mr McDouall and Mr Solomon are the second and third highest polling councillors while Mr Laws is number four.  Other features of the election include the inclusion of Mr Bullock, who at 20 years of age could be the country's youngest councillor. Mr Laws' former partner Leonie Brookhammer failed to gain a seat, as did current councillor Rana Waitai.
