Wanganui East swimming pool will definitely be open for this summer season and the district council will start filling the pools from today.

The decision was ratified at yesterday's Wanganui District Council meeting and come after the council considered a number of engineering reports on the pool.

The main pool and learners pool will operate as will the hydro slide but the diving board will be removed because it is regarded as a hazard.

However, the pool will not be heated because the boiler needs about $30,000 spent on it and that is considered uneconomic to repair.

The pool will continue to be managed by the Wanganui East Pool Trust and nine lifeguards will be on duty at the complex.

December 14 is a likely opening date.

Council will consider the pool's long-term future at its three-year budget planning workshop later this month.
