Three Wanganui Collegiate School sailing crews fell foul of the conditions and Lady Luck at the Feva Class National Championships in Auckland over the weekend.
The crews participated in a coaching and practice day on Friday in very challenging conditions.
On Saturday, five races were sailed while, unfortunately, after along wait on Sunday the sailing was cancelled due to lack of wind.
The school's most experienced team of Marcus Inkster (helm) and Scott Bryant (crew) had a positive first race, however, they then suffered a broken stay and had to be towed in missing two races, putting them well out of contention to finish 22nd out of a fleet of 33.
Felix Schrider (helm) and David Ritchie (crew) also missed two races, suffering a broken mast after an incident with another boat. However, their protest was upheld and they received aggregate points for the two lost races, finishing 18th overall.
Janet Yue (helm) and Logan Bryant (crew) sailed all races, finishing a solid 13th overall and third in the mixed teams.
The Feva class is developing rapidly with entries of 33 in the Nationals this year, up from 22 in 2017. There are over 80 boats in the country, with the highest concentration in Auckland.
