A large vegetation fire at Waiinu Beach grew slightly overnight on Monday, as crews continued work to suppress and contain it.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand assistant commander Clive Lennox said the fire, which started on Monday afternoon, was estimated to be just over 100ha and he expected crews to work on it for “several days”.

No residents in Waiinu Village have been evacuated but have been warned to remain prepared to leave.

There are two crews of firefighters on site on Tuesday morning, supported by two helicopters as well as heavy machinery. More crews are on the way.

Lennox said the wind was currently blowing smoke out to sea, away from the village.

“However, the precautionary advice to local residents remains the same: minimise exposure to smoke if your property is affected by staying inside with doors and windows shut, and be prepared to evacuate if the order is given,” he said.

Waiinu Beach Rd is closed from Silver Fern Farms Waitōtara to the turn-off to the Waiinu Beach settlement for the safety of fire crews and the public.

There will be an evacuation point at the Waverley Community Centre.
